North Americans Play Bingo with 75 Balls
Bingo is a super-popular gambling game with roots in Europe but with fans all over the world. Like every game with international standing, bingo has evolved and changed according to the country and continent in which it is played. Cyberspace adds another dimension to the popular game so that there are more bingo variations than ever.
In the U.S. and Canada, bingo is played with 75 balls and it’s called – not surprisingly – 75-ball bingo. On a 75-ball bingo card, the random numbers are arranged in five vertical and five horizontal rows, with a free space in the middle. At the top of the vertical columns are the letters B, I, N, G, and O. In the B column there are the numbers 1 to 15; 16 to 30 in the I column; 31 to 45 in the N column; 46 to 60 in the G column; and 61 to 75 in the O column. There are many ways to win 75-ball bingo but the fastest and most common way is to fill a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on your bingo card. Other winning patterns include blackouts (the whole card) and assorted other patterns. The first person to fill the designated pattern wins.
In the UK, Bingo Rules
In Europe, they wanted a bigger game of bingo than was played across the ocean so they came up with 90-ball bingo. The game took off like a shot in Great Britain and has now emerged as the most widely played version of bingo in Europe and Australia. Besides the number of balls used, the main difference between 75-ball bingo and 90-ball bingo is the different card arrangements. In 90-ball bingo, the cards, which are called tickets, are arranged in three horizontal rows and nine vertical columns. Each row contains five squares with numbers ranging from 1 to 90. The remaining squares are blank, and there is no free square.
One of the outstanding features of 90-ball bingo is the multiple prizes awarded in each game – each game offers three chances to win so more than one person can win each round of 90-ball bingo. The winning patterns are usually the same and there are usually three patterns in each game. The patterns include a single line across (the first player to cross off any horizontal row); two lines across (the first player to fill any two horizontal rows); Full House (the first player to fill out three lines).
