A Brief History of Bingo
Bingo is a very popular and easy-to-play game of chance played with special numbered cards, a marker or dauber and a caller with a bingo "blower" and a flashboard. Some people say it is not a real casino game, but it allows people to gamble for prizes and money, and now can be played on line and in mobile casinos.
The Background of Bingo
Bingo's history can be traced back to Italy in the 1500's. It began as a weekly lottery which is still played every Saturday in Italy today. It spread from Italy throughout Europe, and, in Germany, it was picked up by a carnival tentman who recognized it as a great carnival tent game.
The carnival pitchman called the game Beano because he used beans to cover the numbers instead of markers. During the excitement of one of the games, a player accidentally yelled out "Bingo" instead of "Beano" and the Bingo name stuck to the game.
As a carnival game, Bingo was so popular that it was difficult to get into the tent to play. There were always crowds of people wanting to play Bingo. It took a priest from Pennsylvania to recognize the fact that the game of Bingo would be a great way to raise money for his financially troubled church.
Bingo - Raising Money for the Church
Although many religious organizations are opposed to gambling, Bingo has long been used to raise money for certain churches. Money gathered at the game goes to the church, and the players play to win donated prizes. Sometimes, a portion of the "take" is paid out to Bingo winners. In America, the Bingo game is a regular weekly affair at many churches all over the country. The church games are generally played for small stakes, and the Bingo evenings are always well attended.
Bingo as an Instructional Tool
Variations of the Bingo card have been adopted by schools, especially in Europe, to help children in primary schools with learning multiplication tables, spelling and foreign languages. The numbers on the cards are replaced with words, pictures or math problems. It turns the original game into an "all purpose" Bingo.
Cruise Entertainment
One of the highlights of cruise ship entertainments is their "Bingo night". Of course, depending on the kind of cruise - its level of luxury - the Bingo prizes may be big jackpots or modest commodities.
Because Bingo is so easy to learn (one only needs to watch a game or two) and so accessible and popular, it is really a lot of fun to play. It doesn't have any "life changing" effect, but it is a very sociable game and a great way to spend an evening.
